1. In

Clothes: quần áo ( in a gray suit: mặc/trong bộ comlê màu xám)

Language: ngôn ngữ ( written in Vietnamese: viết bằng tiếng Việt)

Book: sách ( in the Complete Guide to TOEIC)

Newspaper: báo ( in the International Herald-Tribune)

Magazine: tạp chí ( in Times: trên tạp chí Time)

Department: văn phòng ( in the sales department: ở bộ phận bán hàng)

Field: lĩnh vực( in computer science: ngành khoa học máy tính)

One’s opinion: ý kiến (in her opinion: theo ý kiến của cô ta)

A car / a taxi: ô-tô / taxi (I've left my bag in the car: Tôi để quên túi xách trên xe hơi.)

Trouble: rắc rối, khó khăn (I think I'm in trouble with Dad: Tôi nghĩ mình sẽ gặp rắc rối với bố.)

Danger of:nguy hiểm (The bridge was in danger of collapsing: Cây cầu có nguy cơ sụp đổ.)

Front of: phía trước (He walked along in front of me, holding the lantern.)

The middle of: ở giữa ( Jo was standing in the middle of the room.)

The back of:đằng sau (Two men were sitting in the back of the car.)

The rear: phía sau, đằng sau (a passenger traveling in the rear of a car)  

Line: (xếp) hàng(The kids were standing in line waiting for their teacher: Đám trẻ đang xếp hàng chờ giáo viên của chúng)

The process of:trong quá trình, trong tình trạng (The company is in the process of moving to new offices: Công ty này đang trong quá trình di dời đến văn phòng mới.) 

2. On

a vehicle:xe cộ ( on a bus; on a train; on a plane)

foot:đi bộ (It takes about 30 minutes on foot, or 10 minutes by car: Mất khoảng 30' đi bộ, 10' đi ôtô.)

a trip (We were all going on a trip.)

business: công tác (She's in New York this week on business: Tuần này cô ấy đến New York để công tác. )

holiday: kì nghỉ (I'm away on holiday until the 1st of June: Kì nghỉ của tôi kéo dài đến ngày 1 tháng 6.)

sale:giá cả(These gloves were on sale for only $9: Những đôi găng tay này đang giảm giá, chỉ có 9 đô thôi.)

the market: thị trường, chợ (Handguns are freely available on the open market: Chỉ có chợ đen mới bán súng.)

schedule: lịch trình(The majority of holiday flight depart and arrive on schedule: Những chuyến bay trong kì nghỉ cất cánh và hạ cánh theo đúng lịch trình.)

 time:thời gian (Jack was worried about whether he'd be able to get there on time. (đúng giờ))

(the) television/radio(Later that evening we watched it all on television again: Tối nay chúng tôi lại xem nó trên TV lần nữa.)

the phone:điện thoại(Bridget's on the phone  all day long: Bridget nói chuyện điện thoại suốt cả ngày.)

the other hand:nói cách khác (I'd like not to eat out, but on the other hand I want to save money: Tôi không muốn ra ngoài ăn, nói cách khác, tôi muốn tiết kiệm tiền.)

purpose:mục đích (Fire investigators believe the fire was set on purpose: Các nhà điều tra tin rằng vụ cháy này là có chủ đích.)

3. By

By is used before a point of time to indicate the latest time. By, in this case, means “no later than”: trước ( vừa kịp)

I will be home by noon:Tôi sẽ về nhà trước buổi trưa.

By can mean “next to”: gần, cạnh

She is standing by her friend: Cô ta đứng cạnh bạn mình.

Byis used after passive verbs to identify the agent of the action: bởi, được

This report was written by Peter: Bản báo cáo này do Peter viết.

Byis used with means of transportation and communication: bằng

by car/plane/e-mail: bằng xe hơi, bằng máy bay, bằng (qua) email

Note: in a/my car; on a plane

 By chance(tình cờ) / hand(bằng tay)/ far / check / card / means of (bằng phương tiện...)

4. With

With is used to express the idea of accompaniment or ownership

I went to the restaurant with Andrea: Tôi đi ăn nhà hàng với Andrea. 

The man with the briefcase is the vice-president: Người đàn ông xách vali chính là phó tổng thống.

Withis also used to indicate the tool or instrument used to complete something: phương tiện

He opened the door with his key: Anh ta dùng chìa khoá mở cửa.

He paid for the bill with a credit card: Anh ta trả tiền bằng thẻ tín dụng.

5. Without

Without means “ not having, experiencing or showing something”; “not in the company of someone” or “not doing the action mentioned”: (mà) không có

They had gone two days without food: Anh ta đã đi hai ngày mà không ăn gì.

He found the place without difficulty: Anh ta tìm được nhà / địa chỉ dễ dàng / không gặp khó khăn gì.

She spoke without much enthusiasm: Cô ấy nói chuyện không nhiệt tình lắm.

Don't go without me: Đừng đi khi không có tôi / Đợi tôi đi với.

I don't know what I'd do without you: Không có em, anh biết phải làm gì.

The rest of the group set off without him: Các thành viên trong nhóm đi du lịch mà không cần anh ta.

Don't go out without your coat: Đừng đi khi không mang theo áo khoác / Nhớ mang theo áo khoác khi ra ngoài.

He left without saying goodbye: Anh ta đi mà chẳng chào tiếng nào.

You can't make an omelet without breaking eggs:  Bạn không thể làm món ốp-la khi không đập trứng.

Suddenly and without any warning, the army opened fire: Bất ngờ và không hề thông báo trước, quân đội bắt đầu khai hoả.

He had gone out without his parents' permission: Anh ta đi mà không xin phép bố mẹ.  

6. Within

Within can mean “during a  particular period of time”: trong vòng (thời gian)

We should have the test results back within 24 hours: trong vòng 24 giờ

He fell sick and died within a matter of weeks: trong vài ba tuần

Within an hour of our arrival, Caroline was starting to complain: Trong vòng một giờ bạn đến, Caroline đã bắt đầu phàn nàn.

Within the space of a year, three of the town's factories have closed down: Chỉ trong vòng một năm, ba nhà máy của thị trấn đã đóng cửa.

Within can mean “less than a certain distance from a particular place”: trong vòng (nơi chốn)

The invading troops came within 50 miles of Paris: Quân xâm lược đã tiến đến trong khoảng 50 dặm của Pari.

Adjust the driver's seat so that all the controls are within reach (=close enough to touch): Điều chỉnh ghế tài xế sao cho mọi sự kiểm soát đều nằm trong tầm tay. 

Within can also mean “ inside the range or limits of something”: trong vòng

We have to operate within a very tight budget: trong giới hạn ngân sách eo hẹp

Private security firms have to work strictly within the law: theo luật

You can go anywhere you want within reason (=within reasonable limits): Bạn có thể đi bất kì nơi đâu nếu có lí do hợp lí.

He finds it hard to live within his income: Với thu nhập của mình, anh ta cho rằng khó mà sống nổi.

7. Beyond

Beyond can mean “more or greater than a particular amount, level, or limit”: vượt quá

More people are choosing to work beyond retirement age: Nhiều người vẫn làm việc dù đã quá tuổi nghỉ hưu.

Inflation has risenbeyond the 5% level: Lạm phát đã vượt quá mức 5%.

Expensive luxuries that are beyond the reach of ordinary people: Những thứ đắt đỏ vượt quá tầm tay người nghèo.

Beyond can be used to say that “something is impossible to do”: vượt quá (khả năng)

Scott's equipment was damaged beyond repair: không sửa được

The town centre had changed beyond all recognition: không nhận ra được

Due to circumstances beyond our control the performance has had to be cancelled: quá tầm kiểm soát
